I\u2019m a big proponent smaller living spaces and the concept of building up instead of out, but we don\u2019t all have small spaces. A lot of people are still living in larger homes from the 70s and 80s that are in need of updates, which can be very costly.<\/p>\n

A nice-size bathroom is dreamy until you start trying to bring it into the current century. Those marbled counters that run the length of your galley-style bathroom are pricey to replace. And tiling a large space? I don\u2019t even have to tell you about that.<\/p>\n

Here are things to keep in mind when you have a big bathroom to remodel and a conservative budget:<\/p>\n

Simple materials can be elegant<\/i><\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing wrong with traditional ceramic tile. Look at this bathroom. It\u2019s lovely, and there\u2019s no need for Italian glass to make it that way.<\/p>\n

\"Picture<\/a><\/p>\n

Prioritize<\/i><\/p>\n

This goes without saying in any remodeling project, really. If you have a thing for granite counters, then put it at the top of your list and know that you\u2019re going to need to be conservative with the flooring and tile. Maybe you want pricey mosaic tile in your shower and decide to trade in the custom cabinets and counters. Just be very clear about what matters before you get out your credit card.<\/p>\n

Does everything really have to go?<\/i><\/p>\n

If there\u2019s something in your old bathroom that\u2019s still in good shape, consider keeping it. For instance, we have some vintage avocado tile in our bath that I\u2019ve recently decided to keep and pair with colorful Spanish tile on a small section of floor. It will be a statement, and it will also save around $700 or so.<\/p>\n
